We are very excited about what we’ve done so far and what we plan to do in the future!
As huge fans of the Total War series, we wanted to contribute to the Total War gaming community. Warlode is a free learning resource, geared towards newcomers of the series, while still providing valuable reference material for veterans.
When we first got into the series, we felt a bit overwhelmed by the seemingly large amount of data, especially in the form of unit statistics, how units stack up against each other, etc...
The in-game experience offers a great way to compare stats between units, but we wanted a way to view this information outside of the game experience. For example, on our mobile phones during our lunch breaks at work, laying in bed at night after playing a couple hours of the game, etc… pretty much anywhere, anytime, and on any device.
While we encountered several different solutions online that offered this type of functionality (some better than others), we felt that the current experiences could be improved upon.
Being that we are software engineers in our day jobs and build web apps for a living, we thought we could use a lot of our skills and experience to develop a highly usable, and hopefully enjoyable experience that provides value for the community.
That, plus building stuff like this is good for our portfolios and helps us land great jobs!
At this time, we consider this a hobby. We do it out of love, but do this in our spare time, meaning weekends and evenings. We have an ambitious scope of what we think this could be, but only time will tell how far we get. Right now, we still have those day jobs to contend with… the things that actually pays the bills. But, so long as we're having fun with it (which we most definitely are), we will continue to enhance the app and plan on adding new features and data all the time. Check out some ideas we are floating around here.
I’m a full stack javascript developer by trade. In my professional career i.e. (my day job), I tend to specialize in the UI, but I like to think that I know my way around the back end too. For example, I developed the entire backend for the Warlode application using Node and Express.
My current favorite technology is React. I've worked with other frameworks such as Angular.js, but React is where it's at for now (at least for me).
Throughout my journeys, I've discovered my love is developing data-driven applications. I struggle to see myself being happy doing anything else at this point. I have a passion for this stuff.
And of course, I love the Total War franchise. I think it’s safe to say that it's my favorite video game franchise to date.
I'm new to the world of web development but diving in head first, enthusiastically learning all I can. After a few setbacks in my previous career I decided that a change was needed, enrolled in a certification program and here I am!
While my husband is the mastermind behind the Warlode project, I've been stretching my knowledge by coding all static content for this site as well as in-game screen captures for the app.
At this point I can confidently say I've tackled HTML, CSS and a couple front end frameworks and look forward to moving on to bigger and better things. Who knows... maybe one day I'll take over Warlode. Muahaha!
